A Simple Guide in Caring for Timber
Choosing timber for our homes is a long term investment. Timber decking, fencing timber and timber handrails are some of the most popular uses of timbers for residences. They provide both beauty and elegance in and out of the house.
Timber decking refines the beauty of garden landscapes, living room or the extension of it such as the veranda or patio making it more charming and comely. Fencing timber provides a dependable protection for the house and at the same time a dainty yet luxurious look. Timber handrails, on the other hand never fail to give a grand look and feel to the house especially when some sculptures or other types of craftsmanship are incorporated into its design. It's just simply classy.
Because timber is just so magnificent and picturesque, caring for it is crucial to ensure that it will last. Although timber is naturally resilient and sturdy, these materials still need proper maintenance and care because factors like insects, changing weather conditions and other outside elements affect its longevity.
Here are some very simple procedures which you can apply and keep in mind to ensure that your timber is well taken cared of:
* Timber decking and flooring can easily be scratched when it has an excessive amount of dirt on it. Use dirt trapping mats, small rugs or hall runners and sweep the area regularly with a soft broom or electrostatic mop especially near entrances like doors.
* Using a vacuum cleaner with a soft bristle head is also recommended. Use a wood polish recommended for the kind of wood you have and not just any detergent or wax to avoid scratching the wood surface or making it too slippery.
* Ensure that any spills especially water are quickly wiped clean since water easily damages timber.
* If it is also possible, cover the area of timber decking and flooring with curtains or any kind of drapes to avoid direct sunlight exposure. Too much sun exposure hastens the discoloration of the wood.
* Timber that is regularly exposed to the sun like fencing timber needs a wood preservative. Paint or a timber finish can be used for this purpose.
* Timber finishes, sealers and wood stains are also recommended for timber handrails. They strengthen the timber and make its natural beauty and colour more vibrant.
* Check product specifications first before buying or applying these to any of your wood furniture or timber designs since there are products specific for certain types of wood only.
